Dumps and Landfills Near Me: Every East Valley Drop-Off

Where to actually take a load in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, and Apache Junction. Hours, costs, and who each one will let in.

Two things trip people up out here. The first is that most of these sites only let in residents of one specific city, and they check. The second is that every single one of them is closed on Sunday.

Whichever one you pick, bring a current utility bill and a photo ID with a matching address, and tarp the load. The one exception is the Weinberger transfer station in Gilbert, which is open to anyone and does not check where you live.

Every listing below has a Directions button. On a phone it opens your maps app with the route already set.

Limits are 10 gallons of any one liquid a day and nothing in a container over 5 gallons. Keep everything in its original labeled container, boxed or in a tote, never in garbage bags.

The television problem

Old televisions are the hardest thing on this page to get rid of, and the rules flip completely at the city line. Charities refuse tube TVs outright. Here is where they actually go:

WhereTube TVFlat screen
Mesa hazardous materials facilityFreeFree
Mesa bulk item pickupYes, in the loadYes, in the load
Tempe collection centerFreeFree
Gilbert hazardous waste facilityNo, put it out with bulk trashFree
Scottsdale e-waste eventsNo, put it out with brush and bulkFree
Best Buy$29.99, 31 inches and smaller$29.99, 50 inches and smaller

If you live in Mesa, the Center Street facility is the answer and it costs nothing. Everywhere else, a tube TV usually belongs in your city's bulk trash pile rather than at a recycling drop-off.

Fridges, freezers, and anything with freon

These have their own rules everywhere. Republic Services will not take an appliance containing refrigerant at any of their sites, so the Mesa transfer station is out. The Salt River Landfill takes them but adds a $30 freon extraction charge unless you can show signed paperwork naming who removed the refrigerant and when.

The cheapest route for a Mesa resident is hauling it to the Center Street hazardous materials facility yourself, which is free. Curbside, the city charges $19 per appliance, plus an $11 freon removal fee if it has refrigerant. Arizona law also requires you to take off the doors, hinges, lids, glass shelves, and latches before curbside pickup.

What none of them will take

The Salt River Landfill's prohibited list is the strictest one you will run into: tires, paint, chemicals, used oil, PCB waste, biomedical waste, lead-acid batteries, any liquids, friable asbestos, and railroad ties. Mobile homes and boats are out too.

Sort the load before you drive. One can of old paint in the back can get the whole trailer turned away at the scale.

If you would rather not do any of this

A self-haul trip costs $10 to $30 and takes most of a morning, plus a truck, a tarp, and someone to help lift. It stops being worth it the moment the pile outgrows the truck bed. We load it, haul it, and pay the dump fee, for a flat price quoted before anything moves. Text a photo to (480) 316-1884 and you usually have a number back within the hour. Here is what it costs.

Still deciding between hauling it, the city's bulk pickup, donating it, or hiring it out? All four compared.

Questions

Where is the nearest landfill to Mesa?

The Salt River Landfill at 4660 N. Beeline Highway, just north of Mesa on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Mesa does not run a landfill of its own. Mesa residents can also use the Republic Services transfer station at 6711 S. Mountain Rd., which is closer to most of east Mesa, though Republic will not take an appliance containing refrigerant at any of their sites.

Is any dump open on Sunday in the East Valley?

No. Every public landfill and transfer station listed here is closed Sunday, and the household hazardous waste sites are too. Saturday morning is the last window of the week, and some of those close at 11:30am.

Where can I take tires?

Not to the landfill. The Salt River Landfill refuses tires outright. Mesa residents can drop up to five a day at the Household Hazardous Materials facility on Center Street for free. Gilbert takes five a year, without rims. Tempe takes tires without rims at its collection center on University.

Where do I take an old TV?

Depends where you live, and it is the one item where the rules flip city to city. Mesa's hazardous materials facility takes tube TVs and flat screens for free, which is the best deal in the Valley. Gilbert takes flat screens only and sends tube TVs out with bulk trash. Scottsdale does the same. Tempe's collection center takes televisions. Best Buy charges $29.99 per set.

What is the cheapest way to dump a load in the East Valley?

It depends on your city. Scottsdale customers get a free trip once a week up to 2,000 lbs. Tempe customers get one free load a month up to 1,000 lbs. Queen Creek customers pay $10 for up to 1,000 lbs. Mesa customers pay $15 for up to 2,000 lbs. Chandler gives four free visits a year. All of them require a current utility bill and a matching ID.

Do I need to tarp my load?

Yes, and it is enforced. The Salt River Landfill charges $20 for an untarped or unsecured load on top of the disposal fee.
