There are four real ways to get rid of a couch in Mesa: book the city's bulk item pickup (starts at $31), drive it to the landfill or the Mesa transfer station on the $15 resident program, donate it if it is clean and undamaged, or have a hauler carry it out, which starts at $70 with us. Which one makes sense depends on two things: the shape the couch is in, and whether you can get it to the curb yourself.
| Option | Cost | You have to | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| City bulk pickup | From $31 a load, on your utility bill | Book an appointment, get it to the curb by 6 a.m. | Nothing over 60 pounds. One wrong item and the whole load stays. |
| Landfill or transfer station | $15 a load once a month, plus a possible $30 bulk fee | Own a truck or trailer, tie it down, go on a weekday or Saturday morning | Closed Sunday. Bring your utility bill and a matching license. |
| Donate it | Free | Get it to the curb or garage, be home on a weekday | Clean and undamaged only. The driver decides at your door. |
| Hire it out | From $70 for one couch | Text a photo | It costs money. That is the whole catch. |

Will Mesa bulk item pickup take a couch?
Yes. Furniture is on the city's accepted list, right next to mattresses and box springs. Mesa bulk item pickup is an appointment service, not a set neighborhood week: you request a date on the City of Mesa bulk item pickup page or at (480) 644-6789, and the charge starts at $31 per load for Mesa trash customers, settled on your utility bill after the truck leaves. One couch is nowhere near a full load (a load is about 4 by 8 by 4 feet), so for a single piece this is usually the cheapest way that does not involve your own truck.
Three things get couches left behind:
- The 60-pound rule. The city refuses anything over 60 pounds, single item or bundle. A regular sofa is borderline and a sleeper sofa with the steel bed frame inside is well past it. If you cannot lift one end alone, assume the crew will not either.
- Timing. The couch goes out after 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 6 a.m. on pickup day, at the end of the driveway, not blocking the sidewalk. Miss the window and the city charges a $31 trip fee for the visit.
- The mixed pile. If anything on the refuse list is in the same pile (a paint can, a microwave, a bundle over the limit), the city reserves the right to leave the entire load and charge the $31 trip fee. Put the couch out alone, or only with things you have checked against the list.
The full rules, the appliance exception, and the HOA caveat are in our Mesa bulk item pickup guide. If you rent, or your community handles trash through a property manager, check with them first; some neighborhoods do not get the city program at all.
Can I take a couch to the Mesa dump?
Yes, at either of the two sites on Mesa's $15 Landfill Use Program. Mesa residents get one load under one ton per month for $15, added to the next utility bill, as long as you bring a current City of Mesa utility bill and a driver's license with the same name and address.
- Salt River Landfill, 4660 N. Beeline Highway, north of Mesa. Monday to Friday 6:00am to 4:00pm, Saturday 6:00am to 3:30pm, closed Sunday. Our Salt River Landfill guide has the whole fee schedule.
- Republic Services Mesa Transfer Station, 6711 S. Mountain Rd. at Pecos and Mountain, which is closer for most of east Mesa. Monday to Friday 6:00am to 3:30pm, Saturday 6:00am to 11:30am, closed Sunday. Republic requires a hard hat on site. Every East Valley drop-off is compared in our dump locations guide.
Two catches specific to couches. First, the Salt River Landfill's posted schedule lists a $30 small bulk special handling fee for couches and mattresses on top of weight, and it does not say whether that applies to the $15 program. Ask at the scale house before you unload, because the city does not reimburse any surcharge. Second, a couch rides high and catches wind. The load has to be covered or tied down, and an unsecured load is a $20 fee on top of disposal. You also need the truck or trailer, a second person for the lift, and a morning that is not Sunday, which is when most people want to go.
Who will pick up a couch for free in Mesa?
If the couch is clean, undamaged, and you can get it to the curb, donating it beats every option above, and it is free. Two rules first: “free pickup” means a driver and a truck at your curb or open garage, not a crew in your living room, and every charity's driver has the final say on condition at your door. Tears, stains, pet damage, or a sagging frame mean a polite no and the couch is still yours.
- St. Vincent de Paul runs the most flexible pickup in the Valley. Free standard pickup is curbside, scheduled at least three days ahead, Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm with someone home. Their priority in-home service is the one that will carry it out of the house, and it starts at $110. Pickup line: (602) 254-3338.
- Sunshine Acres Children's Home is the one actually based in Mesa, at 3405 N. Higley Rd. Standard pickup is free with a stated one to two week wait, and everything has to be on the first floor, in the garage, or outside. Nothing ripped, stained, or heavy with pet hair. (480) 981-4114, extension 600.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes furniture, but upholstered pieces must be clean and undamaged, and the closest store is in Tempe at 3210 S. McClintock Dr. Pickup goes through their HaulBuddy system or (623) 551-6000; confirm any fee when you book.
- Goodwill is a drop-off answer. Their home pickup runs through a third-party partner and charges a fee.
- Salvation Army: the local pickup truck has ended. Half the guides online have not caught up.
Phone numbers, drop-off addresses, and the full accept-and-refuse lists for each one are in our Mesa furniture donation guide.
What if the couch is torn, stained, or a sleeper sofa?
Then nobody is taking it for free. The charities decline damaged upholstery, and a sleeper sofa is usually over the city's 60-pound limit. That leaves the landfill run, where the bulk handling fee may apply, or a hauler. Water damage and pet damage are the same story. This is not a knock on the couch. It is just the point where the free options run out and the question becomes how much your Saturday is worth.
How much does couch removal cost in Mesa?
With us, a single item starts at $70, and a whole living room set runs about $160 because we price by how much trailer space it fills, not by the hour. The number is settled from your photo before we load, and it covers the part the other options leave on you: we carry the couch from wherever it is, upstairs and tight corners included, and a couch in usable shape gets dropped at Goodwill or Deseret Industries on the way instead of going in the ground. Full pricing, including the trailer-load estimator, is on our junk removal cost guide, and the furniture removal page has the job photos.
Honest version: if the couch is clean and you can get it to the curb, call St. Vincent de Paul and save your money. If it is regular trash weight and you have a week, the city pickup is a good deal. Where we earn the price is the couch that is heavy, damaged, upstairs, or part of a bigger pile that has to be gone by a date. Text a photo to (480) 316-1884 and I will tell you straight, including when the answer is “book the city pickup.”
Which option should you pick?
- Clean couch, you can get it to the curb, no rush: St. Vincent de Paul or Sunshine Acres free pickup.
- Worn but under 60 pounds, you can get it to the curb, you have a week: Mesa bulk item pickup from $31.
- You own a truck and have a Saturday morning: the $15 program at the Salt River Landfill or the Mesa Transfer Station. Ask about the bulk fee at the gate.
- Heavy, damaged, upstairs, or needs to be gone this week: a hauler. Starts at $70 with us.

City fees and charity rules change. Everything above was checked against the City of Mesa and each organization's own pages for our linked guides in September 2026; confirm the number before you book. A couch at the curb with no pickup scheduled can turn into a notice, and our Mesa code violation guide explains how that goes.
