Option 1: Haul it to the Salt River Landfill
The landfill that serves Mesa is the Salt River Landfill at 4660 N. Beeline Highway (on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, just north of Mesa). Hours are Monday–Friday 6:00am–4:00pm and Saturday 6:00am–3:30pm, and closed Sundays, which is exactly when most people want to go.
- Cost for Mesa residents: loads under 2,000 lbs (one ton) add a flat $15 to your next City of Mesa utility bill, and the program is good for one trip per month. Go over 2,000 lbs and you pay the gate rate on the whole load: $60 a ton with a $30 minimum.
- Bring: a current City of Mesa utility bill (paper or on your phone) AND a driver's license that matches it. No bill, no resident rate.
- Vehicle rules: one-ton non-commercial vehicles only for the resident rate, and the load has to be covered or tied down. An unsecured load costs a $20 fee on top of disposal.
- They won't take: tires, paint, chemicals, used oil, batteries, liquids, or other hazardous materials.
- The catch: you still need a truck or trailer, a second set of hands for the heavy stuff, and a free morning, plus loading, tie-downs, and the unload line in the summer heat.
Option 2: City of Mesa bulk item pickup
Mesa's Solid Waste department will collect bulky items from your curb. You schedule it by calling (480) 644-6789 or requesting online at mesaaz.gov, and pricing starts at $31 per load (roughly a 4′×4′×8′ pile) for Mesa solid waste customers. - Items go at the end of your driveway after 6pm the night before collection; smaller items must be boxed or bagged.
- The catch: you do all the hauling to the curb yourself, pickup happens on the city's schedule (not yours), and the pile sits in front of your house, and your HOA, until the truck comes.
Option 3: Donate what's still good
Furniture and appliances in usable shape shouldn't go to a landfill at all.
